I've tried to put together a comprehensive list of freeware music programs. If you know of anything that you think should be added to the list please leave a comment. I would like to thank the members of the Neowin community for contributing many of the programs on this list.

Welcome

elcome to the Digital Meltd0wn Music Blog. The aim of this blog is to introduce the readers to music that is out of print, commercially unavailable, released under a creative commons license, or with approval by the featured artist. The majority of the music posted here would be considered underground. Don't let that fool you into thinking that the music featured here might be any less enjoyable than that of the mainstream artists you hear on the radio, as this couldn't be further from the truth.
Please keep in mind that the majority of the artists that appear on this blog, along with their respective record labels, are not wealthy and need your support. If you enjoy the material that you find here, please support the artists/labels by purchasing their material afterwards. If you are an artist/label that would prefer to have your material removed from this blog, simply leave me a comment, and I would be more than happy to promptly remove the offending post.
In addition to running this blog, I also work on a few other projects during my spare time. You can find links to those, as well as a few other important links associated with Digital Meltd0wn in the menu bar above.

Thanx for this list! very usefull!
You and your blog rocks!
Fillzy
... and let me recommend foobar2000 and CDburnerXp. both better than any paid program would be.
I take it we're just talking about Windows programs?
Just cos Amarok is imho the best music player out there by miles.
It is frustrating when people leave anonymous comments. Although they are certainly appreciated, it makes it very hard to address the person I'm responding to.
At the moment this list will only consist of Windows based programs. I know a little about Linux, but not enough to put together a adequate list.
To the person who mentioned foobar and cdburnerxp... they are already on the list.
Thanks for your list - here is another good audio tool: BonkEnq
BonkEnc is a CD ripper, audio encoder and converter for various formats. It can produce MP3, MP4/M4A, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, Bonk and FLAC files.
BonkEnc is available for free.
You find the Homepage at http://www.bonkenc.org/
TomTom: Thanks for mentioning BonkEnc. It looks like a solid program, and I've verified that it's safe. I'm adding it to the list now.
zip-genius works for me
excellent site for helping all music lovers THANKS
dave
Great job, my friend!! Thanks
This is fantastic! Awesome site. Great job & keep it guys. Much appreciated.
Add Renoise. Nice List
http://www.renoise.com/
Renoise tracking software is very powerful and community developed freeware. A little difficult to get the hang of but can have amazing affects.

Pity no Mac OSX :) Nice list otherwise.
hello all, any recommends for transfering vinyl to digital. Looking for software or any sites that discuss this process
I share a love/hate relationship with virtual memory because of the way prices are always dropping. I absolutely hate buying Micro SD Cards for my R4 / R4i at (seemingly) a cheap price only to see it become 10% cheaper a couple of months later.
(Submitted using Nintendo DS running R4i DS Net10)
The premeir audio app is Adobe Audition - http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/
I didn't See Pure Data on the list for audio creation. I know the learning curve is a little steep but it is a phenomenal tool. And still free I believe...
@rickdog: Unless I'm mistaken, Audobe Edition is not a freeware app, which is the purpose of this list.
TRANSMITRANSMUTE: Thanks for suggesting Pure Data. I need to overhaul this list. It has been a long time since I put this list together, and I have no doubt that there are a number of great freeware audio applications that I'm not familiar with, but deserve to be on the list.
Please don't hesitate to suggest more apps that you know of which aren't on the list. Hopefully I'll find the time to update this list soon. I'll be sure to add it to my to do list.
please re post the stinky finger link the one that is there is broken thanks
