Welcome

elcome to the Digital Meltd0wn Music Blog. The aim of this blog is to introduce the readers to music that is out of print, commercially unavailable, released under a creative commons license, or with approval by the featured artist. The majority of the music posted here would be considered underground. Don't let that fool you into thinking that the music featured here might be any less enjoyable than that of the mainstream artists you hear on the radio, as this couldn't be further from the truth. Please keep in mind that the majority of the artists that appear on this blog, along with their respective record labels, are not wealthy and need your support. If you enjoy the material that you find here, please support the artists/labels by purchasing their material afterwards. If you are an artist/label that would prefer to have your material removed from this blog, simply leave me a comment, and I would be more than happy to promptly remove the offending post. In addition to running this blog, I also work on a few other projects during my spare time. You can find links to those, as well as a few other important links associated with Digital Meltd0wn in the menu bar above.

Gene Vincent - Dressed in Black

Well V is for Victory & here it is also for Vincent...Sweet Gene Vincent. Here’s one that I don’t think you’ll find elsewhere on the Interweb. Gene Vincent - Dressed in Black from Magnum Force in Shepperton, Middlesex. This one’s from 1982, ten years before Magnum Force launched their great Rebel Heart series.

Round 1 is studio tracks recorded between 1965 - 1970, some Vincent usual suspects like “Be-Bop-A-Lula” & some rarer material like “The Last Word in Lonesome” or “Pretty Girls”. Round 2 is a private ‘live’ recording from 2 May 1971 with Gene & the Houseshakers. The Houseshakers were a British rock 'n’ roll band that formed at the end of 1969, active in the early 1970s, who backed Gene Vincent on two of his European visits.

This might just be an album for completists in some folks opinion, but in my opinion...more Gene...MORE GENE! As Steve Aynsley remarks on the album notes, “We are privileged to re-live some of the excitement of a sadly bygone era, & if the recording quality (live tracks are less than studio quality - NØ) is not quite as we have become used to, excuse us because these items are precious & unique.”

Various Artists - Attack of the One-Man Bands

Attack of the One-Man Bands is exactly that, 58 different one-man bands spread over two discs of raw, crude, and fascinatingly brilliant blasts of sonic madness. So unhinged that it's probably a serious health risk, this set delivers cut after cut of glorious bedlam with all the subtlety of an amplified jackhammer set loose in a glass house. Each of these one-man bands is currently active, and while most are decidedly lo-fi, even the ones who wandered into real studios seem to treat them like giant boom boxes. While a good deal of what is here is vicious punk rockabilly like Phillip Roebuck's crude, spare, and dangerously kinetic "Jackass Blues" or Pete Yorko & the One Man Music Band's "Like Me" assault, some of it, like Royer's One Man Band's version of the fiddle classic "Train on the Island" or 1Man Banjo's deconstruction of "Mole in the Ground" (simply called "Mole" here), is seriously bent and skewed bluegrass mountain music. Trainwreck Washington's banjo piece called "Walked All Night" sounds like an old wax cylinder field recording, and feels like it was recorded a hundred years ago. Uncle Butcher's "No Judge, No Trial" is as raw and unhinged as they come. Then there's the Amazing Elephant Man's primal "Can't Go Outside," which is literally a child's frustrated rant given rhythm and electricity. Scary, unsettling, fascinating, delightful, vital, urgent and insistent, these 58 tracks are somehow oddly comforting despite all their abrasiveness.

Phantom Chords - Johnny Remember Me 12" CD Single

Year of Release: 1990
Label: M&G Polydor Records LTD
Genre: Rockabilly

Track Listing:
1. Johnny Remember Me
2. Ghost Train
3. Relentless

Another single for an unreleased album. This one is from The Phantom Chords, which I played constantly, patiently waiting for an LP that never came out. Great haunting sounds from Dave Vanian and his new band.

History:
Dave Vanian and Roman Jugg of The Damned formed The Phantom Chords in 1988. Having become bored with The Damned and wanting to play music they really could relate to, the two began writing songs and by 1990 had secured a deal with M&G Polydor records. That year, the band's debut single "Johnny Remember Me" was released and the band, sporting a cool rockabilly attitude and doing mostly cover songs, played quite a few sold-out shows. Sadly, within a few months M&G Polydor dropped the band from their label before a second single could be released. Much time and effort had went into writing and recording songs for the debut album, which now would not be released because M&G Polydor owned the material.

Two one-sided acetates exist of the unreleased debut album, and are available only as a bootleg.

Radio Cramps - The Purple Knif Radio Show

Great for those long commutes to work or drag racing in your hybrid while pretending your girlfriend is Mamie Van Doren and opening your PBR with a switchbladeIt's always been a rock and roll dream of mine to hang with The Cramps at their house with a bottle of wine and just flip through their record collection. Well, after many years of listening to their music I did finally meet Lux and Ivy but, alas, we were in an antique store and not near a record player. Never fear, though, this is as close as one can get to that dream. Just crack open a bottle of your chosen poison and download this little gem of a podcast. It's called the "Purple Knif" (pronounced ka-nif) and it's an obscure radio show hosted by Lux Interior back in the 80's where he takes us on an archaeological dig through the vinyl mines of his home and dusts off some fossils of rock and roll past. Sit back and enjoy an hour of high weirdness from the Pope of Psychobilly as he plays a wide variety of poppin' and cracklin' 7-inch wonders including everything from alien offspring to a jammin' version of "The Addam's Family" theme. In between tunes Lux gives us his own introductions with appropriate delay effects and B-movie samples. Great for those long commutes to work or drag racing in your hybrid while pretending your girlfriend is Mamie Van Doren and opening your PBR with a switchblade. No track list on this one. Not only would it ruin the fun but this is a podcast so it's one long track. Just listen to it straight through and I dare you not to wanna go out and buy a leather jacket and some smelly hair jelly. Stay sick!
