Clive Barker's mid-90s horror offering Lord of Illusions is a "love it" or "hate it" affair for fans of the genre. It's been so long since I have watched it that I honestly can't say whether I would still like it today. It has an interesting premise though. What if a handful of the magic acts in the world are using real magic? There of course has to be rivalry between good magic and evil magic so we can have some freaky conflicts. Supposedly the film attempts to combine film noir with horror. I can't recall if it succeeds. I doubt it. If anyone wants to put in their two cents in the comments, that would be cool.
The music is by prolific British composer Simon Boswell. If you are at all familiar with any of the soundtrack releases of his previous works, for example Hardware or Dust Devil, you can expect something compiled in a similar fashion with this release. As usual with his score albums, it is sparsely sprinkled with one-liners from the film. Normally, I hate that, but I have become accustomed to it with Boswell. Also, as usual, the songs from the film are included. Most of them are not appropriate for a horror film, and sound ridiculous on this album (especially the song by Erasure), except for the cover song by the always amazing Diamanda Galás which fits right in. In regard to Boswell's pieces, they do a pretty good job of exploring the mysterious world of magic and its dark side. The theme sounds like it is performed by an orchestra with a choir, but with Boswell because of his penchant for electronic experimentation, this could all be an illusion.
