elcome to the Digital Meltd0wn Music Blog. The aim of this blog is to introduce the readers to music that is out of print, commercially unavailable, released under a creative commons license, or with approval by the featured artist. The majority of the music posted here would be considered underground. Don't let that fool you into thinking that the music featured here might be any less enjoyable than that of the mainstream artists you hear on the radio, as this couldn't be further from the truth. Please keep in mind that the majority of the artists that appear on this blog, along with their respective record labels, are not wealthy and need your support. If you enjoy the material that you find here, please support the artists/labels by purchasing their material afterwards. If you are an artist/label that would prefer to have your material removed from this blog, simply leave me a comment, and I would be more than happy to promptly remove the offending post. In addition to running this blog, I also work on a few other projects during my spare time. Negativland - Escape From Noise

While the sound collage of Negativland's first three studio albums pointed in the band's ultimate direction, they were really rough sketches compared to Escape From Noise. Escape is a full-on audio assault, more musical than ever, but with tight and well-constructed sound sections thrown in. Instead of simply a collection of sounds and snippets, however, each cut on Escape From Noise picks a target and takes aim. "Quiet Please" takes on market research in the world of radio. "Michael Jackson" is a laundry list of pop stars being charged with creating commercial pop. "Sycamore" turns happy, shiny, new pre-planned communities into something far more sinister. Although some other tracks ("Yellow, Black and Rectangular," "Car Bomb") don't really take on particular targets, they're fun nonetheless. Probably the most accomplished piece is the strangely creepy "Time Zones," which talks about how many time zones there are in the Soviet Union (there are 11, by the way, and it's not even funny). Although it wasn't apparent at the time, the centerpiece of the album would be "Christianity Is Stupid," a prime example of how sound bites can be rearranged to say whatever you want them to say. (The full sound bites appear on the album Helter Stupid, the first half of which was inspired by a media frenzy after the band suggested that a murder may be attributable to "Christianity Is Stupid," as an excuse to get out of having to tour in the wake of this album, which turned out to be a much bigger success than anyone expected.) Scattered throughout the album are unexpected guest appearances from some of the biggest names in underground music, including Jello Biafra on "toilet flushing," the Residents on "hoots and clanging," and the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart on mouth sounds and "processed animals." In addition to better-constructed material, the production quality on Escape From Noise is also top-notch, making it a joy to listen to. Although future works would prove more controversial, this is probably Negativland's masterwork.

NoMeansNo - Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy?

A concept album of sorts.. the question posed by the title isn't answered until the final line of the album, Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy? Like nearly everything else the band has released over the years, this is clear and definite proof of the group's inspired, creative energy. More than once the trio hits amazing rock epic heights that have more sheer lift and charge than most anything that laid claim to the title -- about the only North American band at the time who had a similar feeling (if slightly different approach) was Drive Like Jehu. Songs like "The River," with a brilliant, powerful vocal matching the surging, rising riffs, and the constantly time-shifting prog/metal/punk master-stomp "Kill Everyone Now" sound like they're about to burst out of the speakers, come to life, and go off hunting and slaying. Even in short moments, like the mid-album minute-and-a-half "Happy Bridge," the sheer focus and live-wire kick of Nomeansno would leave most other bands gasping for air. That said, more than once this album found the band working in a bit more restraint here and there, almost as if the best response to grunge dominance was to find subtler ways to make the same point. Thus "The Land of the Living" mostly revolves around a low, snaky bassline that the band makes some righteous but not overwhelming noise over (and often keeps to near silence), building up to miniature climaxes throughout. "Machine" starts off calmer before getting more weirdly strident as it goes, while "I Need You" foregrounds the rhythm and vocals at the start, guitar parts echoing only briefly in the background, bringing everything up with a slow, controlled burn, exploding just when needed but ending on the same tense, threatening note.

VA - The Psychedelic Experience - Volume 4

This is the last volume in a four volume series entitled: The Psychedelic Experience. This compilation consists of ultra rare 60's psychedelic and garage punk. The Upper Crust - Entitled

The Upper Crust are an American group from Boston, formed from a surf rock band called the Clamdiggers in '92. They adopt the personas of 18th century aristocrats with titles of nobility, and rock the stage with powdered wigs, period costumes, and a snobbish attitude. After their two studio masterpieces, Let Them Eat Rock and The Decline and Fall of the Upper Crust, the Upper Crust chose to deign listeners with a double live album, Entitled, and it appears that the concept of wigged rockers enamored with '70s hard rock isn't getting any less hilarious.

Entitled includes 25 songs, 11 of which are new. The new tunes were supposed to appear on a third studio album, Once More Into the Breeches, for the Upper Crust's former label Emperor Norton. But Emperor Norton, showing very bad taste, abandoned the project. Some of the new songs are very funny and catchy, while others don't really distinguish themselves. Definitely "Matron," which borrows a bit from an Oasis song and has bassist Count Basie on vocals, "Bleed Me," "Once More Into the Breeches," and especially "Everybody's Equal" (hardly a socialist anthem) rank up there with their gold-plated hits. Of the best of the older material, there's the Upper Crust being shuttled about Hong Kong tune "Little Rickshaw Boy," the extremely rockin' "Tell Mother I'm Home," and the very silly "I've Got My Ascot and My Dickie."

My favorite track on Entitled is 'Everybody's Equal'. "And their assholes smell much sweeter of that I'm sure" is the icing on the cake.

Queen Adreena - Drink Me

Katie Jane Garside first made noise in the early '90s in the U.K. post-punk outfit Daisy Chainsaw. Her rag doll look of torn dresses besmirched in mud made her vulnerability a quick target for the media. Unfortunately, Daisy Chainsaw only released one album with Garside's vocal theatrics; she left the band in 1992 under pressures of being in the limelight. Eight years later, she and former Chainsaw guitarist Crispin Grey joined forces for Queen Adreena with bassist Orson Wajih and drummer Billy Freedom. They issued Taxidermy on Blanco y Negro in fall 2000. Billy Freedom was replaced in 2002 by drummer Pete Howard, formerly of The Clash. The band signed with Rough Trade for their second album, 2002's Drink Me. Since the band switched labels from Rough Trade to One Little Indian, this album has fallen out of print and has become somewhat of a collector's item to new fans of the band. One Little Indian records have stated that there are currently no plans to re-release the album.

Recording techniques having improved since the beginning of the 90’s, QA benefits from a thicker sound than Daisy Chainsaw’s. They have surprisingly added plain brutality to the expected noisy aspect in some songs. ‘Under a Floodboard World’ easily reminds one of NIN but Katie Jane Garside’s outbursts alternating with out of breath singing illuminate the song. ‘Pretty Like Drugs’ is half-way between Daisy chainsaw and Jesus Lizard. Some riffs sound metal (which might be a good after-effect of nu-metal: ‘Kitty collar tight’). When she does not yell, Garside finds back her twisted changing child-like voice in nonchalant songs that convey insanity and malaise again (‘Sleeping Pill’ industrial experiment, ‘Desert Lullaby’ sounds like an unhealthy nightmare while ‘My Silent Undoing’ is a strange lullaby).

Let’s forget Taxidermy’s mishap, Drink Me is Crispin Gray and Katie Jane Garside’s true come back despite a couple of superfluous songs. If there is no hit such as ‘Love Your Money’, ‘Siamese Almeida’ is an impressive visceral and noisy should-be single played at full throttle. ‘For I am the Way’ ends the album on a dubious impression of awakening. Daisy Chainsaw has been one of the bands which really epitomize the word schizophrenia through their music; Queen Adreena might be taking over things where Daisy Chainsaw left off.

Sonic's Rendezvous Band - Sweet Nothing

Sonic's Rendezvous Band was a rock and roll band from Ann Arbor, Michigan in the 1970s, featuring veterans of the 1960s Detroit rock scene. Led by guitarist Fred Sonic Smith, formerly of the MC5, SRB featured singer/ songwriter Scott Morgan formerly of the Rationals, a soul-influenced Detroit band of the 1960s, Gary Rassmussen of the Up and Scott Asheton of the Stooges.

They remained virtually unknown, but their one and only single retained high interest among fans of high energy rock and roll/ Detroit rock. A badly recorded bootleg LP called Strikes Like Lightning was traded in the 1980s. Artists of note, such as David Bowie would speak fondly of SRB. But lack of recorded material made the band a bit of a phantom.

Interest in the band was kindled in the late 1990s when Alive/ Total Energy Records released a studio recording of the as-then unheard song Electrophonic Tonic. In 1999 Mack Aborn Rhythm Arts released a compact disc compilation of rare live and recorded SRB tunes called Sweet Nothing. So receptive was the audience that a second compilation called City Slang was released in 2000. Both albums quickly sold out.

Alien Sex Fiend - Acid Bath

A product of Britain's early-1980s gothic punk movement, Alien Sex Fiend was led by the Nick Wade, better known as Nik Fiend. A staple of the London scene, he made his recording debut under the name Demon Preacher. Several short-lived projects followed before he formed Alien Sex Fiend in 1982 with wife and synth player Christine (Mrs. Fiend), guitarist Yaxi Highrizer, and drummer Johnny "Ha Ha" Freshwater. Mixing the theatrical antics of Alice Cooper with the menacing synthesizer pulse of Suicide, Alien Sex Fiend debuted with the single Ignore the Machine, and would soon follow it up with the full-length Who's Been Sleeping in My Brain? in 1983. A series of indie-chart hits followed in 1984. The success of the album Acid Bath further increased the group's visibility, and in Japan, Alien Sex Fiend became major stars, resulting in the 1985 live release Liquid Head in Tokyo. Following the departure of Johnny Ha-Ha, the group continued as a trio to record 1985's bleak Maximum Security. The Fiends explored more synth and sample-oriented territory on 1988's Another Planet, a trend continued on 1990's Curse. With a revitalized line-up, Alien Sex Fiend resurfaced in 1992 with Open Head Surgery. With the release of the compilation The Singles 1983-1995, the band's affiliation with longtime label Anagram ended, and the Fiends soon established their own 13th Moon Records imprint. With the release of the trance-influenced 1996 EP Evolution, Alien Sex Fiend traveled even further away from their Goth beginnings into the realm of electronica, a move continued on 1997's Nocturnal Emissions.

Acid Bath is arguably ASF's strongest effort to date, and accurately displays the various styles that they have experimented with over the years. It was originally released on vinyl in 1984, and re-issued as a CD with three extra bonus tracks in 1988. The opening track "In God We Trust" starts up the album with the bands usual absurdity of surreal lyrics delivered by bizarre vocals over a dense electronic and sampled soundscape. "Dead and Re-Buried" is a quirky and energetic remix of the ASF classic. She's a Killer is easily Alien Sex Fiends darkest and most haunting tracks, opening with some rather bizarre samples blended with unnerving synth lines. Break Down and Cry is quite a dark piece which greatly differs from most of ASF's silly supernatural themes. It is comprised of very creative use of samples and synthesisers to create an ever evolving yet consistent soundscape, this is all topped off with one of Nik Fiend's most convincing vocal performances. Attack !!!!!! #2 throws in some of ASF's trademark madness to break up the albums bleak atmosphere with grinding guitars, snappy drumming and manic vocals. If you're a fan of the gothic or death rock genres, or just strange music in general, you'll want to give Acid Bath a listen

Various Artists - A Fistful of Fuzz

True to its name, A Fistful of Fuzz delivers a lot of fuzz-drenched material. Rather than being garage punk, however, most of the tracks on this compilation are late-1960s heavy psych, with the fuzz being mainly the acid rock variety. The greatest influences on the material presented are the trippier side of the San Francisco sound, especially the Jefferson Airplane and the acid rock of Blue Cheer, as well as the Iron Butterfly along with a little Doors influence thrown in as well. The themes of most of the songs are: drugs, sex, the generation gap, spirituality, individuality, and generally freaking out. A Fistful of Fuzz contains heavy cover versions of Purple Haze, Season of the Witch, You Really Got Me, and the album closes with a seven-minute freaked out version of Tobacco Road featuring a theremin. The most pop-sounding track on A Fistful of Fuzz, That Was Just His Thing by the In-Keepers, is in some ways the strangest track in this collection. The reference in the title is to Jesus, who "lived and died by the hammer and nail. I guess that was just his thing." Deadly serious spoken word interludes proclaim, "go out into all the world and say these things. And everyone that heareth them not shall be likened unto a foolish man." A Fistful of Fuzz is an all-around good compilation—efficient track notes, better-than-expected audio quality, and most of the tracks on A Fistful of Fuzz are unique to this compilation. - Turnmeondeadman

New Stat Site Needed - Please Help

I've been using Shinystat to track visits to my blog. Up until this point it has served me very well, but unfortunately it stops recording all traffic once 1,000 page views have been reached for a day, and it suggests that I upgrade to the professional package. I would like to try out another service, and I've been around long enough to know that there are free alternatives out there without any limitations, but I'm just unfamiliar with them at the time. I would prefer a site that will include as much detailed information as possible. Please help me out by leaving a comment and mentioning any that you know of. Thanks in advance.

Masamichi Amano - Battle Royale OST

This is the official movie sountrack for the Japanese film Battle Royale. For those who haven't had the pleasure of watching this very controversial movie, here is a short plot summary

Battle Royale takes place in an alternate timeline in which Japan is a police state, known as the Republic of Greater East Asia. Every year fifty 3rd year junior high (grade 9) classes are chosen to forcibly fight to the death against one another until one student per class remains alive.

I believe this soundtrack is perfect for those who love classical, those who aren't familiar with it, and even those who wouldn't normally like it. Much like the film, this album creates a mood of excitement with powerful, dramatic, and even violent music, all the while remaining beautiful at the same time. The soundtrack mixes original pieces by composer Masamichi Amano, alongside classical masterpieces by the likes of Verdi, Bach, Strauss, and Schubert.

Pennywise - Land of the Free?

On Land of the Free?, a record inspired by the worldwide protests against the World Trade Organization, L.A. skatecore veterans Pennywise claim to have written "a soundtrack for political activists all over the world." That this, their seventh album, is one of their finest to date is not due to any inspired political invective. The anthemic barrage of the opening "Time Marches On" sets the tone for an album whose music impacts like a police baton charge. Pennywise work so well as a complete band, it's often nothing short of breathtaking; just listen to the way Randy Bradbury's deft bass lines cleverly weave around the chugging juggernaut riffage dealt out by guitarist Fletcher Dragg on the towering holler-along "Fuck Authority." The politics might not be expressed with an eloquence as revolutionary as Pennywise clearly think, but forget about that. Land of the Free? is a reminder of the sheer seismic power of punk rock.

Here's more Wild Billy Childish as requested, this time in the form of Thee Mighty Caesars. Thee Might Caesars consisted of Childish, Graham Day of the Prisoners, and John Agnew of Thee Milkshakes.

As the sleeve notes say "This is Punk Rock / Rhythm and Beat as it should be; three chords, cheap gear, and a healthy dose of hatred and contempt for the outside world." Skrewdriver - All Skrewed Up

Although Skrewdriver would eventually make themselves infamous by associating themselves and their music with the Neo-Nazi movement, at one time they were putting out quality punk rock without any racist lyrics. The original Skrewdriver line-up were the bridge between the blues-rock bands of the 60's such as the Rolling Stones and The Who, and their 70's punk rock counterparts. "All Skrewed Up" effectively combines the maximum R&B of "The Who Sings My Generation" by The Who and the minimalist speed of the Ramones "Leave Home". However, because of Skrewdriver's later LPs like "What Rider" and "Blood & Honour" which marked the band's descent into racism, most punk experts will gladly ignore this incredible 77 effort. "All Skrewed Up" was released at nearly exactly the same time as Nevermind the Bollocks by the Sex Pistols, but because the Pistols were being hyped the media, All Skrewed Up went largely unnoticed. All Skrewed Up was one of the best UK punk LPs of 1977, yet unfortunately because of what Ian Stuart turned the band into. you will not see "All Skrewed Up" on most favorites lists.

Ladytron - Witching Hour

Much darker and less overtly synth pop than any of their earlier work, Witching Hour is almost unrelentingly gloomy, covering topics like the fleeting nature of relationships, destruction, and war. However, the album wears it well, conjuring a glamorous dystopia with songs like "High Rise" and "Soft Power" -- it's not often that bleakness sounds this pretty. It also helps that Witching Hour boasts some of Ladytron's finest songwriting to date, including the brilliantly melodramatic, ever-so-slightly gothy "Destroy Everything You Touch" and "International Dateline," which shows the band hasn't lost its touch when it comes to writing affecting breakup songs. By stripping away some of the synth pop veneer of 604 and Light & Magic, the shoegaze/dream pop influences that bubbled underneath the surface of Ladytron's music come to the fore on this album. "Sugar"'s trippy blur of buzzsaw guitars and mechanical rhythms take this sound in a noisy, poppy direction, while "WhiteLightGenerator" and the wintry "All the Way" end Witching Hour with a trancelike serenity. While the album loses some of the impressive focus of its first half as it unfurls, the layered, intricate production on tracks like "Beauty*2" and "CMYK", one of Ladytron's best instrumental interludes, remains interesting. While Helena Marnie's ghostly vocals are as lovely and effective as ever, Mira Aroyo's small presence on Witching Hour is one of the album's few disappointments, although she shines on "Fighting in Built Up Areas." Nitpicking aside, Witching Hour is the album that Ladytron always seemed capable of, and its dark, dreamy-yet-catchy spell makes it the band's most sophisticated, and best, work to date.

New Blog for the Digital Meltd0wn Blogroll

I've decided to create a separate blog devoted entirely to the blogroll. The list has become much bigger than I had originally anticipated. There are well over 200 music blogs listed now, and I'm listing more each day. Please update your bookmarks, or check out the list if you haven't already. I'm sure there's a little something for everyone on it. The url to the new blogroll is:

Various Artists - Hell Comes To Your House

This was originally posted on Nitegaunt Media, an upcoming Death Rock blog. Do yourself a favor and check it out if you haven't already.

One of the greatest compilations ever! This album introduced me to some cool shit way back when. I remember when my friend Scott got it on vinyl when we were in high school. We used to sit in his tiny room getting high, playing chess, and listen to this. This is a gem for those who are collectors and completists as well as a great start for anyone who isn't that familiar with the genre. Everything from some early Social Distortion to Christian Death, Super Heroines, and even Redd Kross covering New York Dolls. Highly recommended. I think this is out of print again. It was almost impossible to find for years (at least on the east coast). I picked up this copy at a great little record store that may still be in Asheville, North Carolina, called Green Eggs And Jams. So if you're ever in their neighborhood check 'em out.

Various Artists - Southern Fried Funk

Soul Music from America's deep south is typically distinguished by its raw human spirit and its earthy down-home feel which so often mirrors the people who made it and the places where it was made. But, despite its apparent simplicity, the music is not very easily defined - and it even more difficult to emulate. The essence and atmosphere of the music was fiercely retained by many southern soul artists and producers - particularly the independent operators - at a time when music from other parts of the USA became more sophisticated and began to lose regional idenitity. The flavour is everything. This albums presents a selection of funky tracks from a rich period in the history of southern soul.

For New Orleans music collectors, or fans of funk, this CD has some hard (or impossible) to find obscurities by Warren Lee, Eldridge Holmes, David Batiste and the Gladiators (the great and un-issued “Funky Hips”), and Diamond Joe, plus several Eddie Bo projects, and a funky Wardell Quezergue production on Jewell Bass.

The Music Machine - (Turn On) The Music Machine

The group came together as The Ragamuffins in 1965, but became The Music Machine in 1966. The single "Talk Talk" was recorded at RCA studios on July 30, 1966.
Their debut album, (Turn On) The Music Machine, was released in 1966 on the Original Sound label. Seven of the twelve tracks were originals, written by Bonniwell. One of these, "Talk Talk," became a Top 20 hit in the U.S. The follow-up single, "The People In Me," peaked at #66. Bonniwell blamed the weak showing of this single on a supposed feud between the band's manager and a top record executive. Four cover songs were included on this release, due to record company pressure.

After a promotional tour of the U.S., the rest of the original line-up, which included Ron Edgar (drums), Mark Landon (guitar), Keith Olsen (bass) and Doug Rhodes (organ), left Bonniwell, due to internal conflicts. In 1967, Music Machine (essentially only Bonniwell at this point) were signed to Warner Bros. and re-named The Bonniwell Music Machine. The name was changed to give more prominence to the band's core member, songwriter and vocalist Sean Bonniwell. A self-titled LP was released that year, made up mostly of previously recorded singles with the original line-up. The recording spawned no big hits, despite the inclusion of a few more pop-oriented songs

VA - Only For Real Losers!

This wonderful compilation was originally posted by RYP over at the TWILIGHTZONE! Be sure to stop by and check out his blog if you haven't already.

If you dig those marvelous Diggin' For Gold LPs, get this platter before it's out of print (which sadly is probably the case as you read this). The focus is the same: transworld beat/pop/punk from the '64-68 era.

The acid-rocker "Midsummer Night" by Five Travellers is one of the best things I've heard coming out of Czechoslovakia (OK, not much of a competition here, but believe me, it's a great tune). "Delincuente" by Los Hitters is actually my fave song ever recorded in Mexico; it just doesn't sound like anything else - Latin beat punk at its best. I could use the same words to describe "That's All I Know" by The Avalons, but being from Sweden, their beat is way more Latin than themselves. Guy Darrell's version of "Evil Woman" is just plain evil - wild freakbeat sound mixed with a swinging mod-jazz vibe. And those are just some of the best moments of Side One.
Side Two opens with more mod/punk action thanks to Motivation (produced by Aussie Legend Johnny Rebb). On the insanity scale, The Brazilian Bitles rise fairly high, destroying "Wild Thing". Even sicker are Shades Of Blue Inc from Malaysia, at least recorded there ("It's been a hard day's night, as John Lennon might say. Then how could he know? He can't see through his hair"). Ballad lovers will enjoy Tony Ronald's "It Has Been Too Long", and I don't want to forget The Gentlemen and Los Mustang. But again, that side is strong through the whole groove.

And if you still ask for more, the sleeve glows in the dark! You'll find the only sour point in the notes: why did they have to bullshit us about "Gotta Get A Move On" by The Liverpool Five being their rarest song, only issued on a Tha‹ EP - it's on their second LP for Christ sake. I thank those guys for making this stuff available again, but I just couldn't let them get away with this. - Laurent Bigot (Originally published in Ugly Things #18, 2000)
(Year of Release: 1999)

1. Los Yorks - Abrazame (Peru)

Dub Narcotic Sound System - Industrial Breakdown EP

The indie-funk collective Dub Narcotic Sound System was spearheaded by vocalist Calvin Johnson, the former frontman of the legendary Beat Happening as well as the founder of the famed K Records label. Named in honor of Johnson's own Olympia, WA-based basement studio Dub Narcotic, the project was begun in 1994 with a rapid-fire series of funk, rap, and reggae influenced singles including "Bite," "Fuck Shit Up," "Booty Run," and "Shake-a-Puddin'". From the outset Johnson was the group's sole constant member, although over the course of subsequent releases, including the EPs Industrial Breakdown, Ridin' Shotgun, and Ship to Shore, the revolving lineup grew to include Olympia scenesters like Lois Maffeo as well as Larry Butler, Todd Ranslow, and Brian Weber, all three members of the hip-hop unit Dead Presidents. The first Dub Narcotic Sound System full-length, Rhythm Record, Vol. One: Echoes From the Scene Control Room, appeared in 1995; later efforts included 1996's Boot Party and 1998's Out of Your Mind. Sideways Soul, a collaboration with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, followed in 1999.

More organically funky than many Dub Narcotic releases, the five-track Industrial Breakdown EP is a good starting point for new listeners, nicely summarizing the group's M.O. -- the title track sports a great chicken-scratch guitar lead and a pulsating bassline, while "Typecast Sanction" (inspired by their earlier remix of Jon Spencer's "Soul Typecast") spotlights Calvin Johnson's increasing fascination with studio trickery.

2. The Beat From 20,000 Fathoms
3. Typcast Sanction

The Candy Snatchers - The Candy Snatchers

This was originally uploaded and posted at Born In The Basement. Up till this point I've only had the chance to listen to a single song by the Snatchers entitled Run You Down, so it's nice to finally be able to hear a full length effort by the group.

The year 1996,saw the Candy Snatchers first phenomenal full length album finally released. Originally recorded in ‘95 their were some problems with the DAT’s. They were sent back to the studio and stolen! This lead to many delays, and they ended up mastering the album off a cassette of the session. There were further delays in getting the album out due to their label, Safehouse Records. The album was reviewd in many magazines as best album of 1996 such as maximum Rock n Roll.

Cosmic Psychos - Cosmic Psychos

Here's the Cosmic Psychos self-titled LP as requsted by an anonymous user. The Cosmic Psychos are a rock band based in Melbourne and rural Victoria in Australia. An underground band that has only ever achieved limited recognition, they were cited as a significant influence on the Seattle grunge scene of 90s. In particular they have been referenced by members of Mudhoney and Pearl Jam and have supported both bands. Known for their droning, fuzzed-out bass and wah-wah guitar with repetitive lyrics, the Cosmic Psychos have a simple sound that works well in context and remained largely untouched since they formed in 1982 when they evolved from the short lived Bum Steers and first achieved notoriety for their demo ‘Custom Credit’ which received enormous airplay on Melbourne public radio station 3PBS.

It was later released on the Down On The Farm mini LP for Mr Spaceman Records which also released their debut LP. The band later moved to Survival Records releasing Go The Hack which was later licensed to Sub Pop Records. They eventually signed to Amphetamine Reptile Records for the American market for the release of their 1991 album, Blokes You Can Trust. That album was produced by then little-known producer, Butch Vig and it produced a song that became an enduring fan favourite, "Dead Roo". A song about perils of Australian highway hazards.

The band went on to release Self Totalled and Oh What A Lovely Pie. In 2006, after a lengthy quiet period, the Psychos issued Off Ya Cruet on Sydney’s Timberyard Records.

The Mummies - Shitsville (1990)

This album was originally posted by hdvns on Thee Head Vein blog. Be sure to check it out if you haven't already.

The Mummies' Shitsville 7-inch is a pretty damn remarkable one. Though released very early in their career, it still contains four of their best songs: "(Doin') The Kirk," "A Girl Like You," "Die!," and "That's Mighty Childish." The Mummies couldn't have known at this point the impact they would have on the garage-punk movement, but you can't tell that from listening to Shitsville.

NoMeansNo - Wrong

Following the release of Wrong, Nomeansno could have safely laid down their instruments knowing that they'd just put out the definitive jazzcore album. From the opening bass thuds to the final notes, there's nothing on the album that could be considered a misstep. The playing is incredibly skilled, with the Wright brothers effortlessly shifting tempos and time signatures and Kerr's razor sharp lyrics clicking right into place. Throughout, the album is fused with a sense of energy that was missing from Small Parts Isolated and Destroyed. Best of all is the silly "Rags and Bones" with Kerr (referred to on this release as "none of your f*cking business") claiming that he is "married to a cigarette butt lying in the gutter" over some of the most complex instrumentation you're ever likely to find in good ol' punk rawk. Although they still had a number of albums in them, Nomeansno would never top this one.

Harvey Mandel - Righteous

In the mold of Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, and Mike Bloomfield, Mandel is an extremely creative rock guitarist with heavy blues and jazz influences. And like those guitarists, his vocal abilities are basically nonexistent, though Mandel, unlike some similar musicians, has always known this, and concentrated on recordings that are entirely instrumental, or feature other singers. He recorded some intriguing (though erratic) work on his own that anticipated some of the better elements of jazz-rock fusion, showcasing his concise chops, his command of a multitude of tone pedal controls, and an eclecticism that found him working with string orchestras and country steel guitar wizards. Mandel got his first toehold in the fertile Chicago white blues-rock scene of the mid-'60s, and made his first recordings as the lead guitarist for harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite. Enticed to go solo by Blue Cheer producer Abe Kesh, Harvey cut a couple of nearly wholly instrumental albums for Phillips in the late '60s that were underground FM radio favorites, establishing him as one of the most versatile young American guitar lions.

He gained his most recognition, though, not as a solo artist, but as a lead guitarist for Canned Heat in 1969 and 1970, replacing Henry Vestine and appearing with the band at Woodstock. In the mid-'70s, when the Rolling Stones were looking for a replacement for Mick Taylor, Mandel auditioned for a spot in the group; although he lost to Ron Wood, his guitar does appear on two cuts on the Stones' 1976 album, Black & Blue. Recording intermittently since then as a solo artist and a sessionman, his influence on the contemporary scene is felt via the two-handed fretboard tapping technique that he introduced on his 1973 album Shangrenade, later employed by Eddie Van Halen, Stanley Jordan, and Steve Vai.

Righteous is not as consistent as his debut , due to the presence of a few pedestrian blues-rock numbers. The better tracks, though, show Mandel continuing to expand his horizons with imagination, particularly on the cuts with string and horn arrangements by noted jazz arranger Shorty Rogers. Harvey's workout on Nat Adderley's "Jazz Samba" is probably his best solo performance, and an obvious touchstone for the Latin-rock hybrid of Carlos Santana (whose own debut came out the same year); on the other side of the coin, "Boo-Bee-Doo" is one of his sharpest and snazziest straight blues-rockers.

Bluetip - Join Us

Bluetip formed from the ashes of Swiz, one of the most popular bands in the younger DC hardcore scene of the late 80s. Their singer, Shawn Brown, had been the original Dag Nasty vocalist, and they were on the Sammich Records label, which was distributed by Dischord Records. In 1995, several years after Swiz broke up, former members Jason Farrell and Dave Stern reunited to form Bluetip, with bassist Jake Kump and drummer Zac Eller (Worlds Collide). Bluetip had a serious work-ethic, they released 3 albums on Dischord Records, as well as several singles and split releases on various labels, and toured relentlessly, making many trips through the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Inner-band turmoil resulted in a number of line-up changes. Zac left shortly after the release of their first album, "Dischord No. 101", and was eventually replaced by Dave Bryson. Dave Stern left after the release of "Join Us" and was replaced by Brian Clancy, leaving Jason and Jake as the only original members. In 2001, when Jason moved to New York, the band eventually folded.

Bluetip plays pure, unadulterated rock, mixing sneering vocals with wailing guitars and stop-start time changes. This is fierce, angular post-punk, melding the energy of Fugazi and Jawbox with an intense, swelling melodicism. Singer Jason Farrell contorts his voice to meld with the intense guitars and pounding rhythm section, riding the manic time changes like a rubber skateboarder.

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Lost Picking Flowers In The Woods

Pittsburgh collective Black Moth Super Rainbow is in love with the sounds of cheap and vintage keyboards; the Casio's dinky chime, the Rhodes' percussive skip and the Moog's flatulent squeal. With each successive release, BMSR jettisons a superfluous element of its music in order to give listeners a stronger concentration of the analog warmth that only those aforementioned instruments can provide. On their 2004 album Start a People, BMSR replaced the raspy whispers that made their previous work an acquired taste with the smoother sound of the Vocoder. On their followup EP Lost, Picking Flowers in the Woods, they got rid of the slow, queasy vibrato.

Lost, Picking Flowers in the Woods boasts some of the group's most upbeat material yet. The title track begins with an ascending melody played on a Rhodes piano, which is then drowned out by booming drum programming straight out of a Chemical Brothers record. A hissing synthesizer line swoops in during the second half, and the song ends with the brash sound of gongs being struck. Before the song can come to a full stop, it is interrupted by the second track, Caterpillar House, which sounds like an even faster version of the title track. Every song runs right into the next, giving the EP a suite-like flow; the brief, minimal ditties gain more purpose when book-ended by longer, more developed tracks. By itself, the 90-second Chinese Witch Guy with an Axeis merely a low-fi loop experiment that happens to have an awesome title. It sounds better, though, when placed between the wistful Drippy Eye and the live-band funk of Flowers Grow Here.

As with BMSR's previous work, listening to this EP makes me feel as if I'm being serenaded in the sunshine by the universe's most benevolent aliens. This group's music comes from a parallel universe that I wouldn't mind getting lost in more often.

N.S.U. - Turn On, Or Turn Me Down

I couldn't find out much info about this release from N.S.U. This is the only album that the group released before disappearing.

Released on the same label as Sam Gopal this super rare nine track album was recorded by a Scottish band in 1969, before they disappeared. Pressings of this disc were limited to only 500 copies. Heavy guitar based progressive rock with flashes of LSD, Cream, and similar late '60's bands. With a track called "Stoned" this is, as you would expect, of it's era...

3. You Can't Take It From My Heart

Roky Erickson - I Think of Demons

Roky's catalog is sometimes a maze of different versions and inferior recordings, but one may find this to be a suitable overview of his 80s material, most of which is mind-bogglingly hooky and energetic for a rocker of his age and psychic history. His obsession with demons, aliens, and other horror trappings is more of a charm than a crutch; however, if you're not into it, making it through song titles like "I think of Demons," "I Walked With A Zombie," "Don't Shake Me Lucifer," and "Creature with the Atom Brain" will not endear you to the man's particular world view. But if you are into that, or can simply stomach it, you'll be rewarded with hooks whose simplicity defies logic, and punk-esque energy which defies the age and multiple institutionalizations of its creator.

If you've ever wondered what becomes of 60s garage rockers who can continue to turn out great tunes while acts like the Pretty Things and the Flamin' Groovies may disappoint now, or if you wonder where artists like Robyn Hitchcock, Julian Cope, and even (sometime collaborators) the Butthole Surfers draw their inspiration from, look no further than Roky.

1. Two Headed Dog
2. I Think Of Demons
3. I Walked With A Zombie

Kraftwerk - Autobahn

The 22-minute title track, in a severely edited form, became an international hit single and remains the peak of the band's achievements -- it encapsulates the band and why they are important within one track -- but the rest of the album provides soundscapes equally as intriguing. Within Autobahn, the roots of electro-funk, ambient, and synth pop are all evident -- it's a pioneering album, even if its electronic trances might not capture the attention of all listeners.

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead

It's been described as the goth-rock equivalent of "Stairway to Heaven" -- in fact, it's even longer than that particular song -- but what still remains especially astonishing about the title track is in fact how un-"goth" it is, at least in the clichéd notion familiar in later times. If anything, dub reggae is at the heart of the song, with Haskins' steady pulse and clatter interspersed with heavy-duty bass from David J. But what ultimately carries the day is the combination of Ash's swirling, crisp and snarling guitar work, a mini-masterpiece of art-rock in itself, and Murphy's deep black croon, singing what he described later as lyrics meant to be as much horror-movie parody as anything else, but which still conveyed a romantic majesty thanks to the performance. Until its appearance on the Crackle compilation in 1998, the EP was the only place to get the original studio version, making it one of the steadiest-selling singles in musical history as a result. Not to be ignored is the sharp B-side "Boys," a glammy recounting of dressing in drag which, with its astringent arrangement and massive bass/drum slams, stakes out a great balance between Wire and Gang of Four.

Rockabilly Psychosis and the Garage Disease

Everybody's heard about the bird" - so say The Trashmen and a fitting opener for 16 of the most deranged tracks that you can find. One of the best selling Big Beat releases finally hits CD after a world wide search for tape copies of some of these tributes to the sheer insanity of rock & roll. Apart from that you still get The Cramps with Jimmy Dickinson ripping up Sonny Burgess's "Red Headed Woman", Britain's psychobilly kings The Meteors with a live "My Daddy Is A Vampire" and "Radioactive Kid" along with the late great Gun Club, Tav Falco's Panther Burns with their finest destructobilly and two other bands of this parish the Sting-Rays and The Guana Batz.
